5 eigenschappen van Ruth waar we iets van kunnen leren

Haar man overlijdt en haar schoonmoeder, ook weduwe, wil terug naar haar eigen land. Ruth heeft het niet bepaald makkelijk – maar haar karakter en keuzes veranderen haar leven voorgoed. Wat leren we van haar?

1. Ze is vastberaden

Na jarenlang wonen in Moab – vanwege een hongersnood in eigen land – keert Ruths schoonmoeder Naomi terug naar Juda. Niet gek, ze heeft een moeilijke tijd achter de rug in Moab: hier zijn haar man en twee zoons overleden. Schoondochters Ruth en Orpa, weduwes, reizen met haar mee. Maar halverwege zegt Naomi tegen de jonge vrouwen dat ze allebei maar weer terug naar huis moeten gaan, op zoek naar een nieuwe man. Orpa kust Naomi vaarwel. Maar Ruth blijft.

‘Waar u gaat, zal ik gaan, waar u slaapt, zal ik slapen; uw volk is mijn volk en uw God is mijn God. Waar u sterft, zal ik ook sterven, en daar zal ik begraven worden. De HEER is mijn getuige: alleen de dood zal mij van u scheiden!’ (Ruth 1: 16, 17)

2. Ze durft los te laten

Haar eigen cultuur, haar familie en vrienden, het geloof van haar volk: met de woorden van vers 16 en 17 zegt Ruth het allemaal op om mee te gaan naar Juda. Dat moet niet makkelijk zijn. Maar ze is nieuwsgierig geworden naar Naomi’s volk en vooral naar haar God. Daarom maakt ze deze radicale keuze en durft ze de zekerheden die ze in haar leven had, los te laten.

3. Ze weet van aanpakken

Eenmaal aangekomen in het vreemde land moet Ruth een compleet nieuw bestaan opbouwen. En daarbij is ze niet bang en afwachtend – nee, ze stroopt haar mouwen op en gaat meteen aan de slag. Ze mag op de akker werken en begint al vroeg in de morgen. Er staat zelfs dat ze maar even heeft gezeten (2:7). Ze doet dus haar uiterste best om iets van de nieuwe situatie te maken.

4. Ze is gehoorzaam

De akker waarop Ruth werkt, blijkt van Boaz te zijn. Boaz is erg aardig voor haar, komt haar tegemoet in haar werk – en blijkt ook nog familie van Naomi’s overleden man te zijn, wat hem ‘losser’, beschermer maakt. Naomi komt met een idee. Ruth moet zich mooi maken voor Boaz, ’s nachts aan zijn voeteneind gaan liggen en hem om bescherming vragen – zodat hij hun losser zal worden. En Ruth is Naomi gehoorzaam: ‘Ik zal doen wat u mij zegt’ (3:5). Ze verzint geen argumenten waarom dit geen goed idee zou zijn of waarom ze er nog even over na wil denken. Ze neemt haar schoonmoeder serieus en luistert naar haar.

En zo gebeurt het dat Ruth aan Boaz’ voeteneind gaat liggen en hem vraagt om haar beschermer te worden. Boaz reageert: “Dit getuigt van nog meer trouw dan wat je voorheen al hebt gedaan. Je hebt niet omgekeken naar jongere mannen, arm of rijk.” Ook vertelt hij dat Ruth in de stad bekendstaat als bijzondere vrouw (3:11); ze is immers al die tijd voor haar schoonmoeder blijven zorgen.

HOE GOD HAAR LEIDT

Ruth maakt moeilijke dingen mee, maar haar leven is niet hopeloos. Ze is vastberaden, durft los te laten, zit niet stil en is gehoorzaam en trouw. Al deze eigenschappen komen voort uit één doel: ze wil God volgen. In het Bijbelverhaal wordt duidelijk dat God haar vasthoudt en haar leven leidt. Hij brengt Boaz op haar pad, met wie ze later trouwt en een zoontje krijgt. Boaz en Ruth worden de voorouders van David, en daarmee van de Heer Jezus. Hoe wonderlijk werkt God in het leven van Zijn kinderen!

5 traits of Ruth that we can learn from

Her husband dies and her mother-in-law, also a widow, wants to return to her own country. It's not exactly easy for Ruth – but her character and choices change her life forever. What do we learn from her?

1. She's Determined

After years of living in Moab – because of a famine in her own land – Ruth's mother-in-law Naomi returns to Judah. Not surprising, she has had a difficult time in Moab: her husband and two sons died here. Daughters-in-law Ruth and Orpah, widows, travel with her. But halfway through, Naomi tells the young women that they should both go back home and find a new man. Orpah kisses Naomi goodbye. But Ruth stays.

“Where you go I will go, where you sleep I will sleep; your people are my people and your God is my God. Where you die, I will also die, and there I will be buried. The LORD is my witness: only death shall separate me from you!” (Ruth 1:16, 17)

2. She dares to let go

Her own culture, her family and friends, the faith of her people: in the words of verses 16 and 17, Ruth says it all to go with her to Judah. That shouldn't be easy. But she has become curious about Naomi's people and especially her God. That is why she makes this radical choice and dares to let go of the certainties she had in her life.

3. She knows how to get things done

Once in the foreign land, Ruth has to build a completely new life. And she is not afraid and hesitant – no, she rolls up her sleeves and gets to work right away. She is allowed to work in the field and starts early in the morning. It even says that she only sat for a while (2:7). So she does her very best to make something of the new situation.

4. She is obedient

The field in which Ruth works turns out to belong to Boaz. Boaz is very nice to her, comes to meet her in her work - and also turns out to be related to Naomi's deceased husband, which makes him "looser", protector. Naomi comes up with an idea. Ruth has to make herself beautiful for Boaz, lie down at his feet at night and ask him for protection - that he may be their redemption. And Ruth obeys Naomi: “I will do as you tell me” (3:5). She doesn't make up any arguments why this wouldn't be a good idea or why she wants to think about it for a while. She takes her mother-in-law seriously and listens to her.

And so it happens that Ruth lies down at Boaz's foot and asks him to be her protector. Boaz responds: “This shows even more loyalty than what you have done before. You have not looked after younger men, rich or poor.” He also relates that Ruth is known in the city as a special woman (3:11); after all, she continued to take care of her mother-in-law all this time.

HOW GOD LEAD HER

Ruth is going through difficult times, but her life is not hopeless. She is determined, dares to let go, does not sit still and is obedient and faithful. All these qualities stem from one goal: she wants to follow God. In the Bible story it becomes clear that God holds her and directs her life. He introduces Boaz to her path, whom she later marries and has a son. Boaz and Ruth become the ancestors of David, and thus of the Lord Jesus. How wonderfully God works in the lives of His children!
